Scope and Contents Archaeological and historical notes on Caisteal Bhuiri [Caisteal Bhuirgh/Borve Castle, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula] and Clanranald. Among the notes it is stated that Raol mac Alein [Raghnall mac Ailein] was the last to inhabit Caisteal Bhuirgh and that he added the porch and extended the west side of it. The castle was originally built on a sgeir mhara and Biorlain mac ic Ailein [Clanranald's birlinn] was anchored 'in a poll' to the east side of it. After that, children used to swim there. In...

Scope and Contents Archaeological and historical notes collected from John MacKinnon, Cairinis/Carinish, Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist on the construction of Teampull na Trionaid. Included in the details are that the gable of the building fell down after people dug at the foundations to get the flagstone which were there. A man known as Uilleam Clachair, possibly William Paterson, who came from Assaint a Tua [Asainte/Assynt, Cataibh/Sutherland] to work at Baile Raghnaill/Balranald and Baile nan Caileach/Nunton...

Archaeological note on a burial site at Dungaineach [Dùn Gaimhnich/Dunganichy, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula] stating that it is at the 'bealaich on the machair' and that beside it was a heap of bones and ashes. The graves are surrounded 'by stones on edge with lintels across top of the lintels [causewayed] over with small peb[bles] carefully.' Carmichael adds that there is a similar place at Carnan Dhiarma[i]d in Iocar [Ìochdar, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist]

Scope and Contents Archaeological note relating to a stone found on Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula by Archibald MacRury, Bailevanaich [Baile Mhanaich/Balivanich] described as being a small stone with a hole and found in the strand at half-tide 'just below tunga' that summer at Ua Oirisy Mianaish an underground cave between Roisnish and Scarigleoid [Uamh Orasaigh Mheanais, Orasaigh, Meanais, Ròisnis/Rossinish and Sgaraileòd]. Charm beginning 'Tha glug a seo tha glag a seo' and accompanying custom which states that it was said to keep others from taking away the torradh [milk profit] as no one would want anything which was dirty. The charm is composed of six lines. The text has been scored through in pencil and over it in ink is written 'Trans[cribed] No III p[age] 203 A[lexander] A[rchibald] C[armichael] Creagorry 8/10 1875'. The accompanying note reads 'Old women used to say this in driving their cows in the morn[in]g'. Charm for counteracting the stealing of milk profit, 3 January 1872

Charm probably collected in Gramasdail/Gramsdale, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula for counteracting the stealing of milk profit in which pins are stuck in the bubbles of boiling milk, which has had its profit stolen, and a handful of thatch is placed on the lintel of the door. This was thought to restore the profit to the milk.
